Priya’s Flash Sale: A Masitus Story

Priya is leading her team’s first flash sale. Every box is ticked, and checkout still falls over. A seven-page comic about the week Masitus caught it.

One and a half million shoppers, one release, one Friday at 8 PM. The same week, told twice: first the way most of us run it, across a dozen tools and a checklist, then with Masitus watching every update as it lands.

Cover. Priya’s Flash Sale, No. 1, a Masitus story. Priya smiles in front of a crowd, with the Masitus mark beside her. Friday, 8 PM: 1,500,000 shoppers, one release. Introducing Masitus, so you can stop chasing your work, and start leading it.Act 1: without Masitus. This is Priya. She’s leading her team’s first flash sale. On Friday at 8 PM, one and a half million shoppers arrive at once. She runs it the way most of us do: across a dozen tools (Slack, Gmail, Jira, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Dashboards, Tickets, Zoom, Wiki, GitHub), with one checklist for everything the release needs: QA, launch review, release. In Jira, Wei Chen reports “QA passed. Tested with 200 shoppers.” Priya thinks: Wei’s QA results are in. They look good. One more box ticked. In her inbox: Sam Lee, “Support rota for Friday is up”; Lena Ortiz, “Platform Monthly: we made the order system…”; Arjun Mehta, “How’s Flash Sales looking?” Priya thinks: Lena’s platform newsletter? Not about Friday. Archive, and move on. Swoosh! Most of the week’s updates have nothing to do with the release.Friday. Tests passed, QA signed off, the launch review is done. Everything’s on track. Priya says “Time to release” and sends the email: “We’re live. Flash Sales is out. Doors open at 8 PM.” Whoosh! 8:00 PM. Crash! At eight, one and a half million shoppers arrive, and checkout falls over; every phone shows an error. Every box was ticked, and the release still broke. Checkout down. Somewhere in her week, something was missed.Act 2: with Masitus. Same week, same apps. This time, she has Masitus with her. It watches every update as it lands: Sam Lee in Support on Slack, “Support rota for Friday is up”; Lena Ortiz in Platform on Gmail, “Platform Monthly: we made the order system smaller”; Wei Chen in QA on Jira, “QA passed. Tested with 200 shoppers”; Arjun Mehta, her manager, on Slack, “How’s Flash Sales looking? Need a status by Wed.” The Flash Sales release updated itself with 4 new signals. Monday morning. By Monday morning, Masitus has already caught it: the release is at risk. The Monday brief says: Flash Sales is at risk. Here’s why. Friday needs checkout to hold 1.5M shoppers. Today, it can take 600K: 900K short. That’s news to Priya. “Wait… why wasn’t this caught earlier?” Masitus shows the timeline: Thursday 8 October, load test passed; Saturday, capacity cut to 600K, in Lena’s newsletter; since then, no new test. The load test ran before capacity was cut. The cut was in Lena’s newsletter, on Saturday. Priya: “I need this unblocked. Fast.” So she hands it to Masitus, pressing Handle it. Klik! Masitus turns it into a plan, drawn from everything the launch touches: Lena’s newsletter, the load test of Thursday 8 October, Wei’s QA report, Arjun’s request for a status by Wednesday, and the support rota. Drafting a plan…The plan for the Flash Sales release: 1, mark the release at risk and tell the team; 2, ask Platform to restore checkout capacity; 3, brief Support on Friday’s risk; 4, tell Arjun before his Wednesday status (needs Priya); 5, approve Platform’s fix (needs Priya). The plan looks right, and she spots the two steps that still need her. She approves once. Masitus does the work, as her, with a receipt for each: release marked at risk, capacity request sent as Priya, Support briefed as Priya. Arjun should hear this from her. The draft to Arjun, copying Lena: “Flash Sales: at risk, fix underway. Arjun, checkout can take 600K today and Friday needs 1.5M. Capacity was cut on Saturday, after our last load test. Platform is on the fix.” She adds “Lena, thank you for jumping on this so fast,” and sends it as Priya. Lena’s fix arrives already read: her pull request to raise checkout capacity for Friday’s flash sale, reviewed by Masitus: looks solid, one concern, no fresh load test since the change. Priya adds “Lena, can we get a fresh load test before Friday?” and approves. Flash Sales: on track. Caught on Monday. Fixed before Friday.Friday, 8 PM. This time, her “We’re live” email is true. Ka-ching! One and a half million shoppers arrive, and checkout holds; every phone shows Paid. Everyone who needed her has heard from her. The evening brief: checkout holding at 1.5M shoppers; Arjun has Priya’s update; Lena has been thanked; Support briefed for tonight. She didn’t chase her week. She led it. Masitus.
